The theme of the 24th ICDE World Conference is “Expanding Horizons – New Approaches to Open and Distance Learning”. This conference provides a forum for sharing of ideas on redefining the roles and strategies of ODL in promoting cross-nation human capacity building. The conference discusses issues and challenges for ODL under the following sub-themes:

• ODL and human capacity building
• ODL in a changing world
• Quality and ODL – the way forward
• Management and strategic development of ODL
• Open Educational Resources (OER) in a global world
• International development and distance learning

The 24th ICDE World Conference features 8 keynote speeches, 297 paper presentations in 9 parallel sessions, and about 150 posters.

Pre-Conference Workshop

Topic:

Establishing the 3rd Generation of e-Learning: From Principles to Practices

School of Professional and Continuing Education at the University of Hong Kong (HKU-SPACE) and Beijing Open University

This workshop is provided for educators and trainers to learn and master new knowledge and skills of e-learning development in order to design and deliver high-quality e-learning courses effectively and efficiently.

The workshop is designed for participants to:

1. understand the three generations of e-learning development, which are from one-way transmission through interactive learning to a comprehensive learning mode.
2. learn how to design a 3rd generation e-learning platform, which is powerful, flexible, convenient, easy to use, shareable, and cost-effective to support student-centred teaching and learning.
3. learn how to develop 3rd generation e-learning courses. Using new and emerging user-friendly software, teachers and trainers could design and develop comprehensive e-learning courses by themselves.
