Abstract

Human capacity building aims at transforming community approaches to social and environmental problems. Capacity Building includes Human Resource Development, the process of equipping individuals with the understanding and knowledge that enables them to adapt to changes and perform effectively. To achieve continuous all-round growth for any developing society certain fundamentals like gender parity and community building are mandatory.

Distance learning promotes a flexible and innovative system of education with use of ICT. It can reach a wide cross section of the society and is capable of handling offbeat subjects to endorse development. Therefore, in this study ODL technology is applied to disseminate value education like ‘Gender equality education’, which might help in achieving a sustainable society. Gender awareness of people intermingles with many relevant issues of development such as educational deprivation of girls, poor health status of women and children, incidences of feticide, declining sex ratio, AIDS, prostitution, early marriages, sexual harassment, unequal wages, etc.

Tapping this cord, an innovative self-learning package comprised of ‘an interactive self-learning programme’ and a ‘documentary film’ was devised with a systematic process giving ‘Gender Education’ by direct intervention method using distance mode.  Interesting finding revealed that in spite of being urbane, educated and young, respondents believed in gender stereotypes having polarised images of masculinity  and femininity. Women were found more gender biased than men at all ages. With a sample size of 833 adults, the experiment proved extremely effective in driving the concepts across to redefine gender values. In this effort ODL facilitated human capacity building for sustainable development.
