Abstract

The high percentage of non-active students at the Faculty of Economics, Universitas Terbuka (UT) signals an alarming problem that does not satisfy the expectations of distance students. This dissatisfaction of students is influenced by academic integration, social integration, and cost factors. This study aims to identify the influence of commitment, academic integration, social integration, as well as cost factors on the decision of non-active student to return to studies at the Faculty of Economics, UT. It further attempts to reveal the percentage of non-active students who wish to re-enrol in their higher education studies at UT. Questionnaires were sent to 1,308 non-active students of the Faculty of Economics of UT on the island of Java. A total of 53 questionnaires were returned and analysed further. The results of the study showed that 60% of the respondents said that they intend to continue to study at UT. The results of regression analysis showed that the commitment factor had no significant influence on the intention to return to study. Meanwhile, academic integration, social integration, and cost factors significantly influenced the intention to continue to study. Consequently, the UT ability to control factors related academic integration, social integration,  and cost make these variables as key factors in attracting non-active students to return. Various academic integration strategies can be done to help students complete their studies at UT, such as online tutorials, online examination, and other online services.
